There is an abundance of research which tells us that students who don’t read and write during the summer face a big loss in their literacy growth as they begin the new school year.  To promote higher literacy achievement at E.F.R., the English Language Arts department is once again sponsoring a summer reading program for students entering eighth grade next fall.  All students will be required to read two books.  The books have been chosen to complement the curriculum in the upcoming grade.  Eighth graders must read a The Girl Who Survived: A True Story of the Holocaust, as well as an award-winning book from the recommended reading list which can be found on Mrs. Schuler’s webpage.

Many of the books on the lists can be found at Wickson Library, whose summer reading program for teens kicks off in June.  This year’s theme is Own the Night.  The staff at Wickson would also be happy to show you how to use MEL, the Michigan Electronic Library, to access books that are not directly at Wickson Library.
